Abstract

1302876 Oxidation of olefines ROHM & HAAS CO 4 Dec 1969 [13 Dec 1968] 59246/69 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] Olefins are oxidized in the gas phase at an elevated temperature in the presence of oxygen and a catalyst comprising cobalt molybdate fused with one or more of arsenic telluride, bismuth telluride or antimony telluride, the composition also containing at least 0À5 wt. per cent of a solid sublimable molybdenum compound (see Division B1). The specified reactions are (i) the oxidation of propylene or isobutylene to acrylic acid and methacrylic acid at 400‹ to 460‹ C. or 360‹ to 420‹ C. respectively, a pressure of atmosphere to 40 atmos., a contact time of less than 5 seconds, an olefin/oxygen mole ratio of 1 : 0À2 to 1 : 2 and in the presence of water vapour to give water/olefin mole ratio of 1 : 1 to 10 : 1, and (ii) the oxidation of propylene or isobutylene to acrolein or methacrolein at 350‹ to 400‹ C. or 325‹ to 375‹ C. respectively, the other conditions being as above.
